Party mode!

Locked Down In Lord Of The Rings Land

Five months ago, Birgit took the “free” in freelancer very literally – she flew off to New Zealand and has been working from UTC+13 ever since. Although she planned to be back in Amsterdam in April, travel restrictions got in her way. We reached out to hear how she’s been spending her days quarantined in one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

You’ve already been distant working, so what’s new?
For me, nothing has really changed, except for the fact that I can no longer go outside for a workout or a coffee. I borrowed a spinning bike from my neighbours, and I now give spin classes to myself.

Where have you been working from all this time?
Mostly from the living room table, but sometimes I sit outside.

What are you actually enjoying about being self-isolated?
To be honest, I’m already kinda done. I was really looking forward to going back to the office and talking, laughing and singing with my colleagues. My partner, who’s here with me, also works at FedEx, but he’s a serious developer so no LOLs during the day.

What’s your soundtrack of the day?
Anything from Cher to Britney, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, J.Lo, Dua Lipa. Well, you get the point.

What have you been watching lately?
I’m into documentaries right now. Watched ‘Don’t f**k with Cats’ and that kept me up for days.

What do you do keep connected these days?
I’ve reactivated my Instagram account. I’ve been offline for a year and a half and that’s been great. I’ll probably deactivate it after the lockdown.

Have you checked anything off your bucket list?
Not yet, but I would like to learn Spanish.

What’s the first thing you’ll do when you get back to the Netherlands?
Ride my motorbike to see my mother and lift her up (literally, my mom is tiny). Also, fly to see my sister and her twins.

Got any advice?
Get up early and have a routine. Make a plan for what you will be doing and stick to it. And plan some me-time in between. Play a game or do some exercises. It will make you feel more energized.

Ok, enough of the serious stuff. Let’s do a quickfire round!

Sweatpants or party dress?
Party dress, always the party dress!

Bob Ross, Mari Kondo, or Angry Birds?
Angry Birds! I love my Nintendo Switch and play a lot of Mario Kart right now.

Best song to lift your mood?
Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up and anything by Cher or Britney.

Thanks, Birgit! Looking forward to meeting you in person when all this is over.
